Youth work sector's response to Covid-19

New interactive module on international youth work

July 15 is World Youth Skills Day! To mark the occasion, we have organised this brief online session for those who would like to get familiar with the digital Skills Summary tool. Creating a youth arts policy for your organisation

This training provides participants with the skillset to develop a youth arts policy within their organisation, contextualising it within the wider policy environment with a focus on building on existing practice. Read more >>
 

Individual recognition for professional youth workers with 15+ years’ experience

The North South Education and Training Standards Committee for Youth Work (NSETS) has recently approved a process whereby those who do not hold qualifications specifically in youth work but who have been continuously engaged in professional youth work practice for 15 years can apply for a statement of individual recognition. Find out more >>
 

Reaching out to minority ethnic Irish young people

Dr Maria Barry and Dr. Malgosia Machowska-Kosciak of Dublin City University are carrying out a piece of research that aims to gather and examine the opinions, experience, and future intentions of minority ethnic young people in Ireland aged 18-24. #BringingPrideHome 2021


Youth Work Ireland, Belong To and Foróige joined forces in a very special campaign for Pride 2021. The #BringingPrideHome campaign saw almost 1,000 young LGBTI+ people from local youth groups around Ireland receive a Pride Self-Care Pack to keep the spirit of Pride alive while remaining socially distant as the annual Dublin Pride Parade is moved online for the second year due to Covid-19 restrictions. The Care Packs included a Pride t-shirt and a Tote bag with a bespoke design by LGBTI+ artist Aodh Quigley, Pride badges, rainbow face paint, pronoun pins, stickers and a coming-out guide for LGBTI+ young people.  The packs were delivered in time for young people to be able to wear them for Pride Day on June 26th.


Youth poetry grand slam

Join Creativity and Change on July 6 at 8pm for a mind-blowing evening of powerful youth spoken word from all over the world. In partnership with the Irish Refugee Council, this series has explored global justice themes through the medium of poetry. Register here >>


VSI youth climate justice project

VSI's online Youth for Climate Justice project at the end of July will bring together a small group of young people to learn about climate justice and how they can help to achieve it. The project hopes to empower young people with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to advocate for climate justice. VSI is particularly hoping to include the voices of young people from underrepresented backgrounds or those with fewer opportunities in the project. Deadline: July 4. Read more >>
 

Irish Girl Guides sleep out to end homelessness

Members of Irish Girl Guides slept out on the night of June 25, to tie in with Depaul’s Sleep Out, to raise awareness of homelessness. Some slept in tents, some in makeshift shelters, and others in sleeping bags under the stars. The girls took part in a number of activities and challenges, like making dinner using just a kettle, to gain an insight into the challenges faced by people experiencing homelessness. Foróige Shine With Pride mural

Foróige unveiled their Shine With Pride mural recently. The artwork was created in collaboration with SUBSET. LGBTI+ young people from across Ireland engaged in a series of virtual sessions with the artist KinMx to share their lived experiences of growing up LGBTI+ in Ireland and come up with the messages they wanted the mural to communicate. Webinar from Jigsaw and the HSE

This three-hour webinar is aimed at those who work or volunteer with young people and will give participants a greater understanding of the impact of Covid-19 on youth mental health as well as practical ways to support the young people they work with at this time. Youth leadership programme for Irish young people

Friends Forever International is offering a one-of-a-kind programme designed to develop bold and empathetic youth leaders from across the island of Ireland. The programme includes virtual sessions and a two-week trip to the organisation's HQ in New Hampshire. It will focus on conflict transformation (personal and community), public speaking, communication, and identity. As one of the most challenging youth leadership programmes in the country, it emphasises resilience, empathy, and action. Learn more >>


Creativity & Change postgraduate programme

This programme is designed for anyone interested in how creative engagement can nurture global citizenship and empathic action around global justice themes. It takes place one weekend a month from September to May online and outdoors around Cork City. Participants will engage in a wide range of hands-on creative processes including visual arts, creative writing, and theatre, and explore global justice topics as well as putting new skills into practice by designing learning experiences for a range of contexts. Call for youth participants: Barriers to accessing justice

The Children's Rights Alliance has secured a grant to conduct a study on what children know about their rights in general and about rights related to specific groups such as children in care, children with disabilities, migrant and refugee children, LGBTI+ children, and children in conflict with the law. Researchers have been commissioned and a youth panel is being recruited. If you would like to nominate young people to take part, send their name, age, and a brief paragraph about them and why they want to take part to Julie Ahern, Legal and Policy Manager. Master of Arts in Advanced Facilitation Skills for Promoting Health and Wellbeing

Do you want to become a highly skilled facilitator and advance within your chosen profession or seek new employment opportunities? The skills acquired on this programme are essential when engaging with people or working with groups. Starting this September, it will be delivered in Dublin on one Friday and Saturday per month per semester and three residential weekends dispersed across the three semesters. Find out more >>


New child, youth, and family database for practitioners and researchers

This newly-launched database provides detailed information about standardised measurement tools which have been used in Irish research and evaluation with children, young people, and their families. It gives quick access to key information about each measure as well as links to publications and research data where the measure has been used. Take a look >>

The E-Bulletin goes out to over 5,000 subscribers with an interest in youth issues. It is a great opportunity both to let the sector know about the fantastic work your organisation does and to target youth workers and those interested in youth work issues directly.
