June 29, 2021

This Thursday, July 1, is Canada Day. This year especially, comes with a deep responsibility for all non-Indigenous people. It is not a time to celebrate, but rather a time for taking action and to act in allyship. We must stand in solidarity with Indigenous communities, acknowledge the role we play in colonialism as settlers and fight to hold our systems accountable to the change that is needed.

It is our responsibility to fight for justice. Our government, policymakers, and communities are encouraged to spend time on July 1st reflecting on privilege and to learn about the atrocities both past and present happening around us to Indigenous people across Turtle Island.

In light of the discovery of hundreds of unmarked and mass graves on the sites of former residential schools in Cowesses First Nation and Kamloops, Egale is adding its voice to that of Indigenous activists and community leaders in the call to cancel Canada Day celebrations - a day that was built on colonialism and genocide. Every one of us has an individual responsibility to educate ourselves, stand in solidarity with our Indigenous communities, and fight for justice.

Egale files an application at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in groundbreaking Intersex Human Rights case

Egale Canada filed an application at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice to challenge the constitutionality of exemptions in the Criminal Code that permit ‘normalizing’ aesthetic surgeries on intersex infants and children, prior to these individuals being old enough to themselves consent to such surgeries. The term intersex refers to a person whose chromosomal, hormonal or anatomical sex characteristics fall outside the conventional classifications of male or female.

Egale’s new video series on 2SLGBTQI Family Planning & Assisted Reproductive Technologies answers top questions around family planning for 2SLGBTQI communities – in both the Federal and Provincial (Ontario) context.

Can a surrogate be paid? What are the rules and regulations around sperm donation? Where in Canada are multi-parent families permitted? Questions like these will be asked and answered. Have your say – we’re looking for community consultation, as questions will be addressed in our video series launching August 2021.
