The Chesapeake Bay is not only one of the most beautiful things about our state, it's also an incredible resource. Just recently I spent time with my family on the Eastern Shore along the Choptank River, one of our amazing Bay tributaries.

Most of our states’ rivers, creeks, and streams are part of the watershed region that flows into the Bay. That means what happens to the water sources in our neighborhoods eventually makes its way downstream into the Chesapeake.

The Chesapeake Bay is a Maryland treasure, and we need to do our part to protect it against the negative environmental impacts caused by polluted runoff, chemical contamination, and more.

As governor of Maryland, I will fight to ensure we’re investing in environmental solutions via restoration efforts that will help protect the Bay from greater harm.

Efforts are already underway to upgrade sewage treatment plants so they do not pollute the watershed as substantially. There are also initiatives to repopulate oyster hatcheries, because maintaining the oyster population is key to improving water quality.

But these efforts are not enough. We can always do more to ensure our planet — and specifically our natural resources like the beautiful Chesapeake Bay — are taken care of.
