Friend,

I can’t tell you how excited I am to be joining the Texas Democratic Party as Co-Executive Director alongside Hannah Roe Beck. So while we’re starting in on this new chapter together, I wanted to tell you a bit about myself -- where I come from, why I’m in the fight, and what I’m most excited about in the journey ahead.

But first, I want to talk a little about history -- because right now, we’re living smack in the middle of it. The Texas Democratic movement of today is about as fierce as it’s ever been -- and we’re going full speed ahead. Hannah’s making history as the youngest executive director in party history. And me? I’ll be the first-ever Black executive director of the Texas Democratic Party. We are building a Democratic Party that is reflective of our state’s rich diversity.

I grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, in a family of civil rights leaders and public educators. Every one of them was a fighter -- because not fighting was not an option for us. That ethos -- the knowledge that we needed to fight for our communities, because if we didn’t, no one else would -- took me all the way from political campaigns across the Southeast, to my five years as Organizing and Training Director for Planned Parenthood Texas Votes, to leading training programs on a presidential campaign and for national progressive organizations, to my service as a DNC member and President of the Black Austin Democrats.

Friend, that’s why I’m here today. And I know the same is true for you. With Texas Republicans attacking our communities left, right, and center, protecting Texas is up to us. We’re fighters because we know that our communities need us -- and our movement is the best chance at saving our state and our future. Will you rush $7 or whatever you can today to push that fight forward?

When I look around at this movement, I see progress everywhere. I may be the first Black executive director for this party, but I won’t be the last. One day, “firsts” like me will be the norm in Texas. We’re building a Democratic Party that looks like the people we represent -- Black and Brown Texans, working Texans, LGBTQ+ Texans, Indigenous folks, folks with disabilities, young people -- and an authentic, inclusive coalition of people who are leading the change in this state.

To get there, we’ve got to keep doing what we’re doing: pulling together to win. Working relentlessly to win. And above all, keeping our eye on why we fight. Because at the end of the day, people’s lives are at stake. We need to win for the governing power to make a difference in Texans’ everyday lives. Friend, if we keep fighting this hard, that’s exactly what you and I are going to do -- win!
