Deplatforming Misogyny: Report on Platform Liability for Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence

In April, LEAF released a timely research report on how digital platforms should be held accountable for their role in proliferating abusive conduct that constitutes gender-based violence.

Authored by technology and human rights lawyer Cynthia Khoo, the report draws lessons from other governments’ efforts around the world to address the role of platforms in technology-facilitated violence. It calls for urgent federal action, guided by feminist and equality principles.

The report generated exciting media coverage in the Toronto Star and CBA National Magazine, among other outlets. To learn more about other media coverage of the report, visit our website

A recording of the launch event for the report is available here.
Colucci v. Colucci

In June, the Supreme Court of Canada released its decision in Colucci v. Colucci, setting out much-needed clarifications in child support law that will make it easier for single mothers to receive the child support that they are owed. The Court adopted many of the arguments that LEAF and West Coast LEAF set out in our joint intervention in the case.

Mass Casualty Commission

LEAF, in coalition with Avalon Sexual Assault Centre and Wellness Within, will bring its expertise on gender-based violence and gender equality to the Mass Casualty Commission’s investigation into the tragic events that took place in Portapique, Nova Scotia, on April 18-19, 2020.

The Mass Casualty Commission is an independent public inquiry created to examine the April 18-19, 2020 mass casualty in Nova Scotia and to provide meaningful recommendations to help protect Canadians in the future.

R. v. Sullivan; R. v. Chan

In May, the Supreme Court of Canada decided that LEAF will be able to make submissions to the Court as an intervener when it hears the cases of R. v. Sullivan and R. v. Chan in October 2021. These cases will examine the defence of “self-induced extreme intoxication” for certain offences under Canadian criminal law.

LEAF’s submissions will focus on the need to balance Charter rights in deciding whether accused persons should have access to this defence – including women’s equality rights and rights to security of the person, as well as the rights of the accused. LEAF will also examine the role of Parliament in enacting laws to hold people accountable, including for their actions while extremely intoxicated.
