Indigenous peoples across Ecuador have launched a national strike to demand the government end harmful neoliberal economic reforms based on the fossil fuel and mining industries and IMF-imposed austerity measures.
Ecuadorian military and police have responded to protests with arbitrary arrests and violent repression. Over 700 people have been arrested, 100 wounded, and at least four deaths from police violence have been confirmed.

The nationwide protests have closed provincial highways and shuttered oil production, and the government has declared a state of emergency and curfew. Amazon Watch is on the ground and bearing witness first-hand to these events, and we remain committed to standing with our partners in the indigenous movement during this time of crisis and beyond.
The global human rights and climate justice community calls for an end to these violent and repressive attacks against peaceful indigenous protesters demanding justice and recognition of their rights.
Please join the urgent call for peace and justice in Ecuador!
