I get asked this kind of question a lot: Where do we find hope when such a large part of the country is so out of touch with reality and willing to toss the basic principles of democracy out the window?

I’m sure we all might answer that differently. For me, even on the hardest days — even when you lose an election — you get up and you keep fighting for what you know to be right. I didn’t sign up for this fight because it’d be easy or fun. I did it because I believe it’s necessary, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

I have faith in the American people, not because they’re perfect or always make the right choice. It’s because I’ve spent the bulk of the last four years talking to people from all walks of life. And I firmly believe that most of us, most of the time, are striving to be better and to make this world a better place. And even though there are some very loud, very wrong voices getting a lot of air time right now — they do not define who we are as a country.

That’s why this mission is so personal for me: It’s absolutely essential that we take power away from members of Congress who betrayed their oath and are willing to dismantle our democracy for partisan gain.

What they’ve done is, in the most literal meaning of the word, un-American. But working to defeat them at the ballot box is probably the most American way to fight back.
