John,
During the first year of the pandemic, 881 Secret Service employees were diagnosed with COVID-19.
That’s a staggering number, and far more than previously known, uncovered thanks to a CREW investigation. Read our full findings here.
The vast majority of the COVID positive employees were part of the division that protects the president, vice president, and their family members, highlighting the tragic and unnecessary human cost of Donald Trump’s and his family’s pandemic travels and his and Mike Pence’s rallies that went against public health guidance.
Unfortunately, there’s still a lot we don’t know about the Secret Service’s policies for protecting agents from COVID-19, because DHS Inspector General Joseph Cuffari, a Trump appointee, reportedly blocked an inquiry into exactly that. But what we do know is damning. Trump’s extensive travels and risky behavior, like the time he put on a photo-op in a car with Secret Service agents while he was being treated for COVID, put agents’ lives at risk.
If you’re able, consider making a contribution to support CREW’s work, so we can continue impactful investigative work like this. We can’t keep exposing corruption and abuses of power without your support.
Thank you,
Noah Bookbinder
President, CREW
