BETSY DIBENEDETTO LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Times they are a changing. Did you ever think that freedom of speech would be under attack and those with different ideas would be silenced? Did you ever think Black Lives only matter if killed by white cops and that saying all lives matter was racist? Did you ever think that movements like Antifa and BLM would be allowed to burn, vandalize, attack police, and harass innocent citizens without serious consequences? That there would be a call for defunding the police at the same time crime is increasing in so many cities and too often law enforcement are being attacked? Or that illegal immigration would get the nod over legal immigration? Did you ever think that color of skin would be more important than character content and competence when becoming employed or receiving government loans and grants? Did you ever think white people would embrace the idea of white privilege much to the surprise of those white people who are also struggling? Or that math, hard work, and being on time were signs of white supremacy? Or we would once again see the rise of anti-Semitism? Did you ever think public education would teach history in a manner to see racism as the major moving force in our past? That passing election laws to make sure only legal votes count would be considered voter suppression? But more importantly that our trust in our institutions like the FBI, CIA, military, and even our judicial branch has diminished as they have become more political? Hard to believe this is what is happening in our country once known for being a beacon of freedom, opportunity, and liberty. Just what do you think is the end game of those pushing this radical agenda? Jay “Independence Day ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.” John Adams ‌ GOVERNOR DESANTIS SIGNS LEGISLATION TO SET THE PACE FOR CIVICS EDUCATION IN AMERICA Last week, Governor Ron DeSantis signed HB 5, SB 1108 and HB 233 that will collectively strengthen civics instruction and civics literacy education in Florida’s kindergarten through postsecondary public schools. “I’m proud to sign three bills today that prioritize civics education in our schools,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “The sad reality is that only two in five Americans can correctly name the three branches of government, and more than a third of Americans cannot name any of the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment. It is abundantly clear that we need to do a much better job of educating our students in civics to prepare them for the rest of their lives.” In addition to many state dignitaries at the signing, Governor DeSantis was joined by individuals who escaped persecution from totalitarian regimes in countries like Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua, including Ana Margarita Abaunza. Ana came to Florida from Nicaragua when the Sandinista regime took power, then moved to Venezuela with her husband, and had a good life there until Hugo Chavez took power, forcing her to flee again to the United States. House Bill 5: Civic Education Curriculum House Bill 5 requires the Florida Department of Education to create an integrated K-12 civic education curriculum that includes an understanding of citizens’ shared rights and responsibilities under the Constitution and Bill of Rights. It further expands required instruction in high school to include a comparative discussion of political ideologies that conflict with the principles of freedom and democracy essential to the founding principles of the United States, such as communism and totalitarianism. This bill also provides a library of “Portraits in Patriotism” based on personal stories of diverse individuals who demonstrate civic minded qualities, including those who have moved to this country after being persecuted in nations like Cuba and Venezuela. Senate Bill 1108: Education Senate Bill 1108 requires state college and state university students to take both a civic literacy course and a civic literacy assessment as a graduation requirement, bridging civics education between our high schools and postsecondary institutions. The bill further requires high school students to take a civics literacy assessment that has no high stakes consequences. If a high school student passes the test, that student is exempted from the postsecondary test requirement. The bill also expands the character development curriculum for high school juniors and seniors to include instructions on how to register to vote. House Bill 233: Postsecondary Education House Bill 233 requires state colleges and universities to conduct annual assessments of the viewpoint diversity and intellectual freedom at their institutions to ensure that Florida’s postsecondary students will be shown diverse ideas and opinions, including those that they may disagree with or find uncomfortable. GOVERNOR DESANTIS SENDS LAW ENFORCEMENT TO SOUTHERN BOARDER Friday Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that Florida will send 50 of its own law enforcement officers to the Mexican border in Arizona and Texas to combat what DeSantis called a "created crisis" at the southern border that has led to increased criminal activity in Florida DeSantis said the 50 officers deploying may be the first wave of others that the state will send in response to a call for assistance. The announcement comes a week after Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sent a joint letter to the governors of the 48 other states asking them to send additional law enforcement staff and resources to help patrol their states' borders with Mexico. "We're thankful for these folks being willing to step up and being willing to help an issue that's causing a lot of problems, obviously, in some of our friendly states," DeSantis said. "But also, it is causing a lot of problems in these United States." DeSantis said Florida is the first state to answer those governors' calls for mutual aid. "We're here today because we have problems in Florida that are not organic to Florida that we've been forced to deal (with) over many years, but particularly over the last six months, because of the failure of the Biden administration to secure our southern border," DeSantis said. "And, indeed, to really do anything constructive about what is going on in the southern border."
