Sonke Gender Justice (Sonke), on behalf of MenEngage Africa Network, is looking for a consultant to develop an induction strategy for its members and country networks. The purpose of the induction strategy is for the establishment of the orientation and inferences to the prospective MEA and its affiliated country networks members on the overall principles and politics of the work on ‘transforming patriarchal masculinities and work with men and boys in gender equality, what it means of them signing up to become the member of the network and the processes to follow.

Background

Sonke Gender Justice, established in 2006, is an organisation that strives to prevent domestic and sexual violence, reduce the spread and impact of HIV and AIDS and promote gender equality and human rights. Sonke is a co-founding member of MenEngage Alliance, a global social change network that works to transform unequal power inequalities and dismantle patriarchal systems by transforming patriarchal masculinities and working with men and boys in gender equality through intersectional feminist approaches in collaboration with and in accountable ways to feminist and social justice movements. The Alliance is present in over 84 countries around the world, and organised via 43 country and 6 regional networks in Africa, Caribbean, Europe, Latin America, North America and South Asia regions. MenEngage Alliance works collectively and individually towards advancing gender justice, human rights, and social justice to achieve a world in which all can enjoy healthy, fulfilling and equitable
relationships and their full potential. The global Alliance consists of representatives from each continent who in turn coordinate the country networks in their respective continents. Sonke is also the secretariat and co-chair of MenEngage Africa (MEA) Alliance, which consists of 22 countries. Sonke provides capacity building and technical support to partners within the MEA Alliance.

MenEngage Africa Alliance is the regional network of MenEngage Global Alliance. MenEngage Africa was formed in 2006 with the goal of working in partnership to promote the engagement of men and boys in achieving gender equality, preventing HIV, promoting human rights and reducing violence at all levels across the continent, including questioning the structural barriers to gender inequalities. MenEngage Africa network comprises of 23 country networks that collectively form the regional network structure.

The MenEngage Africa network affirms that its work with men and boys stems from and honours the pioneering work and ongoing leadership of women’s rights organizations and movements. The Alliance stands in solidarity with the ongoing struggles for women’s empowerment and rights. MenEngage Africa members also believe that to achieve transformative and sustainable social change around gender inequalities, a broad range of social change strategies must be implemented ranging from small-scale to large-scale interventions which harness all efforts towards systemic, large-scale, and coordinated action to achieve gender justice and equity.

Consultancy Objectives, Purpose and Expected Results

Justification

The process of induction is very key to the work of MEA as this will accord new and prospective network members to be familiar with MEA ways of working. This induction process will provide basic information about MEA thereby according the members an opportunity to learn about the rules and regulations, code of conduct, aims and objectives of MEA Alliance

Overall Objective

The purpose of this consultancy is for the development of a MenEngage Africa Alliance induction process to guide the induction for new MEA members. The induction process will introduce all new or prospective MEA members to the MEA Network processes with the aim of bringing them up to speed as quickly as possible to the functioning of the network, to the MEA code of conduct, MOU, to the various chapters that exist with MEA Alliance and to the processes of joining the networks. The induction pack will also include a roadmap on the various levels of the induction process from the country level stretching to the regional level

Deliverables

The consultant will be expected to deliver the following outputs:
1. Induction process flowchart
2. Induction training checklist
3. List of induction pack materials

The consultant will start with a survey among MEA, about their induction experience, what they would have liked to go through, and how the process can be improved for future inductees, that way the consultant starts from a point of information


Location and Timing

The consultant will work from where they are based.

Timelines

The project should be completed within 2 months

Relevant experience in organizational development and network building
