Urge Congress to Include Anti-Horse Slaughter Language in Transportation Bill
Dear John,
Reps. Troy Carter (D-LA), Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Dina Titus (D-NV), John Katko (R-NY), Steve Cohen (D-TN), Vern Buchanan (R-FL), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Andy Barr (R-KY), Buddy Carter (R-GA), Paul Tonko (D-NY), Donald Payne (D-NJ), Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA), and Jerry Nadler (D-NY) have filed a bipartisan amendment to the transportation package (H.R. 3684, the INVEST Act) that would prohibit the interstate transport of equines to slaughter. The House of Representatives is slated to vote on the transportation package in the coming days, so it's important that representatives hear from constituents, asking them to vote YES on the Carter-Fitzpatrick horse slaughter amendment.
The entire process of horse slaughter--from transport conditions to rough handling at the slaughterhouse to improper stunning methods--is inherently cruel. Although no horse slaughter plants currently operate in the United States, tens of thousands of American horses are exported each year to slaughterhouses in Canada and Mexico. Horses unfortunate enough to wind up in the slaughter pipeline typically endure long, overcrowded journeys without adequate food, water, or rest before meeting a brutal end at the slaughterhouse.
If this amendment is included in the next transportation bill that passes Congress, the movement of horses to slaughter would effectively be halted in the United States.

What You Can Do
Lawmakers now have a prime opportunity to shut down the predatory horse slaughter industry in the United States once and for all and spare countless horses from this gruesome fate.
Please use AWI's Compassion Index ([link removed]) to look up your district. A quick phone call is vitally important as the amendment is expected to be considered soon.
After calling and following the prompts to be connected to your representative, you can simply leave a brief message along these lines:
"As a constituent, I ask that you vote yes on the Carter-Fitzpatrick horse slaughter amendment to the transportation package. Americans overwhelmingly oppose the slaughter of horses for human consumption; this amendment would prohibit the transport of American equines to slaughter, sparing countless horses from this inhumane end."
A quick phone call is all it takes! Please be sure to share our alert with family, friends, and co-workers, and encourage them to call their representative as well.
As always, thank you very much for your help.
Sincerely,
Joanna Grossman, PhD
Equine Program Manager
