It is convenient to believe that the horrific events of January 6 were an aberration caused by a series of unfortunate security failures and a uniquely extreme president. However, as our legal system works through the carnage of that day, a less optimistic picture is emerging.
During a hearing to revoke bail for an alleged insurrectionist who threatened to shoot Speaker Pelosi, DC District Court Judge Amy Berman Jackson had this to say:
“The steady drumbeat that inspired the defendant to take up arms has not faded away; six months later, the canard that the election was stolen is being repeated daily on major news outlets and from the corridors of power in state and federal government, not to mention in the near-daily fulminations of the former President.”
Simply put, Judge Berman Jackson is telling us that the threat of another insurrection remains so high that keeping alleged insurrectionists in jail while they await their trials is the ONLY way to stop them from joining another coup.
Donald Trump and Big Lie Republicans have already incited one insurrection, and their refusal to acknowledge that Donald Trump did NOT win the 2020 election may just incite another.
