John --

This week, I wrote a letter to EPA administrator Andrew Wheeler strongly condemning his agency’s string of politically motivated attacks against California.

In the last few months, Trump has gone to extreme lengths to weaponize the EPA to attack our state for political gain. Here are a few of the worst examples:

⇒ While Trump held a fundraiser in Silicon Valley, Andrew Wheeler personally threatened to “take action” against California under the false pretense that homelessness was contributing to water pollution in the Bay Area.

⇒ The EPA announced it would revoke a decades-old rule that allows California to set emissions standards that are stricter than the federal requirement.

⇒ Then, in an apparent reversal, Trump’s EPA threatened to withhold highway funding from California due to its “air quality problems.”

These actions are both hypocritical and punitive. California has a deep and successful history of bipartisan cooperation to improve air and water quality in our state. If Trump’s EPA was actually interested in protecting public health, they should take a page out of our playbook instead of making these idle threats to attract headlines.

As Trump continues to fill the EPA with oil and gas lobbyists, I’m working alongside Democrats and Republicans in Congress to enact real action to protect our environment. That includes bills to end offshore drilling and shift to 100% zero-emission vehicles by 2040.

It’s urgent that we get on a pathway to a clean, sustainable future. And if Trump and Andrew Wheeler will not uphold the mission of the EPA, we will.

Thanks for your support,

Mike
