John — It’s hot, very hot.

Just last week, it was 128 degrees in Death Valley, Tucson saw eight straight days of temperatures 115 degrees or higher, and Phoenix endured six days in a row of the same heat. Beyond the danger extreme heat poses to public safety, it also creates a scary wildfire risk.

Unfortunately, multiple blazes have already broken out in several Western states, with more than seven million people under red flag warnings for a critical fire threat. Experts say that with the coming summer months, the fires may only get worse.

Climate change is making heat waves three times more likely compared to 100 years ago and has placed us in a 22-year megadrought. Wildfire seasons are becoming so long, the term is becoming useless. Fires blaze year-round now.

The number of new wildfires in 2021 so far is at a ten-year high. More than a million acres have burned from more than 28,000 wildfires. The biggest so far scorched more than 170,000 acres, larger than the entire city of Chicago.

Climate change is contributing to unheard of wildfires, particularly in the West. A recent study showed that climate change has caused the largest fires in the Rocky Mountain forests since the medieval era.

These findings are alarming, and have devastating consequences. Wildfires pose risks to millions of lives, cause widespread property damage, and threaten water supplies even after they are contained.
