John,
We've received an incredible ourpouring of support for the Purple America Project, our effort to use social media and scientific message testing to inoculate the public against right-wing disinformation. Dear John,
After four years of Donald Trump, capped off by the deadly January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, we knew we had to do something bold to save our democracy.
So we launched what we hoped would be one of the biggest, most strategically impactful projects in our history.
We called it the Purple America Project. The idea was to expand our social media following to reach the people being targeted by right-wing disinformation and use the most effective, scientifically tested messages to inoculate them against right-wing lies and conspiracy theories.
We have just completed Phase One of the project, and the results are even better than I’d hoped.
Here are just a few of the tidbits from the summary memo that my team prepared for me:
*
Our
best-performing
videos
are
being
watched
to
completion
almost
nine
times
more
often
than
the
benchmark
rates
we
were
told
to
expect.
*
We’re
beating
both
Ben
Shapiro
and
Sean
Hannity
on
Facebook
engagement.
*
We’re
now
dead
even
with
Fox
News
on
Instagram,
despite
our
having
a
tiny
fraction
of
Fox's
staff
and
budget.
*
Crucially,
we’ve
dramatically
expanded
our
following
among
young
people
on
Instagram
and
TikTok.
Here's the rub: while our posts and videos are performing incredibly well with the people who see them, our total audience is still smaller than that of Fox News. So now we’re launching Phase Two of the Purple America Project, with the goal of growing even bigger than Fox News on social media, especially on the platforms used most often by young people.
Will you make a donation to help save our democracy and stop right-wing disinformation? [[link removed]]
The magic of the Purple America Project is connecting with people who aren’t already getting progressive messages in their media feeds, like young people and moderates who are open to our ideas.
Americans tend to live in an information filter bubble, only hearing from sources that reinforce their current views. This project is all about breaking through those information silos so we can win over hearts and minds.
After developing and testing the most persuasive and compelling content, we’ve built one of the largest audiences on social media of any progressive group.
Now we need to go even bigger.
To make Phase Two of the Purple America Project a success, we’re counting on your help. We don’t have big corporate backers or massive advertising revenue, like the right-wing media. We have you, our members, but together, if everyone donates a few bucks each, we can do it.
Will you make a donation to help support our work? It’s OK if you can only afford a small donation. The way we’ll win is by adding up thousands of small donations, and every dollar counts. [[link removed]]
Thanks for all you do,
Robert Reich
