Friend--We kicked off our Mid-Year Campaign last week, and we're really counting on your help to reach our goal of $75,000 by the end of the month. Please chip in whatever you can.
Friend,
Donald Trump is out of the White House. COVID-19 is fading, at least in wealthier nations. The world, they say, is returning to “normal.” That’s the narrative that the corporate media is selling.
But there’s a problem: “normal” is destroying our planet, threatening our democracies, concentrating massive wealth in a tiny elite group, and leaving billions of people without access to life-saving vaccines amid a deadly pandemic.
“Normal” is now a world with deadly, triple-digit heat waves and drought across the western U.S. that began before summer even started. It means massive hoarding by the super-rich, who have seen their median wealth increase 2484% since 1983, while in some cases paying $0 in taxes. And it’s forcing 7 in 10 college students to go into debt, saddling tens of millions of people with $1.8 trillion in federal student loans.
Here at Common Dreams, we refuse to accept any of this “normal” as acceptable.
But in the face of these existential emergencies, Common Dreams is facing two potentially fatal threats to our funding model.
First, donations to progressive organizations have fallen sharply since Trump left office. It’s understandable that after four years of cruelty and absurdity, people need a break from politics, but it’s a huge problem for a nonprofit news organization such as Common Dreams that relies on reader donations to fund our journalism.
Second, traffic to our website from Facebook and Google has crashed through the floor in recent months, not only reducing our readership but cutting off donations.
In this moment of dual crisis, we’re launching our Mid-Year Campaign with a goal of raising $75,000 by the end of this month. Will you donate right now to help keep progressive, independent journalism alive?
