People For Member, As June and Pride Month come to a close next week, we observe the anniversary of the Stonewall riots on June 28, 1969, when New York police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club in Greenwich Village, sparking protests across the country that turned the tide for LGBTQ+ rights. Even as we mark the 52nd anniversary of this watershed moment for LGBTQ+ rights, the Far Right continues its relentless attacks on the rights and equality of the LGBTQ+ community. Their latest tactic is to use insincere claims of "protecting women's sports" to keep transgender girls from participating in high school and college athletics. These attacks reduce current complex scientific research on transgender athletes to misleading talking points and fearmongering. But the attacks aren't just scientifically inaccurate – they're the latest attempt by the Far Right to eradicate the right of transgender people to exist in public spaces. That’s what spurred Right Wing Watch, a project of People For the American Way that tracks right-wing extremists and anti-LGBTQ+ groups, to write our new report: “Unsportsmanlike: The Right-Wing Attack on Transgender Women and Children.” In the report’s own words: “The argument, which is little more than outdated anti-trans narratives masquerading as feminist talking points, is designed to exclude trans athletes while presenting Republicans as defenders of women’s rights…” The report released this week puts these attacks in historical context, outlines how the Far Right is using disinformation to target transgender people, and examines the extremist groups behind state-level anti-trans legislation. As we approach tomorrow’s anniversary of the Stonewall riots, it’s vital that we expose the Far Right’s attacks for what they are: a bigoted sham. To commemorate this important day, please read the report and share it widely: Watch and share this post on Facebook >> Watch and share this post on Twitter >> This fight against hate and bigotry has been going on since long before the Stonewall riots, but I have hope that in my lifetime we will be able to stop the Far Right’s attacks on LGBTQ+ peoples’ right to exist – once and for all. There’s a lot more to be done – but I look forward to have you fighting by our side. Thank you for all that you do! In solidarity, Kristen, Right Wing Watch
