Recently, the team here at Common Dreams conducted a survey of our
readers to get feedback on how we're doing and about our newly
redesigned website, and we were humbled by the praise we received from
so many of you.
Here's a sample of the feedback we received:
"I so trust and admire your work."
"You are my go-to daily news outlet and I share your articles on social
media all the time."
"Kudos to you and your team!"
But there was another bit of feedback that we heard from a number of
people, which was nicely summed up by a reader who simply said: "Don't
ask for money so often."
We don't like asking for money any more than you like being asked. But
worse than pestering our readers for money is the alternative: taking
money from corporate advertisers or putting our journalism behind a
paywall so the only people who can read our work are the ones who can
afford to pay for it.
Common Dreams was built on the idea that to remain true to our mission,
we must be free to read and be accountable only to you, our readers.
But today we're facing dual existential threats to our fundraising
model. First, donations to Common Dreams and other progressive groups
have dropped precipitously since Donald Trump left office. Second,
website traffic from both Google and Facebook dropped suddenly and
sharply prior to last year's US elections, leading directly to a
reduction in donations from readers.
In order to continue providing the nonprofit progressive journalism you
count on every day, we must meet our Mid-Year Campaign goal of raising
