While millions of Canadians are standing up to demand greater climate action and
emissions cuts, Canada’s largest oil and gas lobby group is working behind the
scenes to derail the federal government’s efforts to address climate change.

The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) is the main lobby
organization for oil and gas companies operating in Canada. For too long, CAPP has been allowed to influence federal legislation and
deliberately undermine, delay—and even kill— policies that would help reduce
emissions across the economy.

We’ve released a report that exposes a decade of CAPP’s lobbying efforts.

more!” to oil and gas companies, now more than ever.

Here are three key findings from the report that highlight the sweeping
consequences of the oil and gas industry's lobbying efforts.

* Environmental regulations are being axed: In the last decade, six major areas of legislation or regulation – including
water protection, environmental review of industrial projects, and carbon
pricing – have been cut, weakened or delayed to further oil and gas industry
interests.
* Lobbyists want a huge increase in emissions: CAPP wants the next federal government to allow an increase in greenhouse
gas emissions from the oil and gas sector to a level equivalent to the
current emissions of B.C., Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, P.E.I.,
Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut combined.
* Industry is hoarding the profits: Between 2000 and 2016, oil production in Canada has increased by 75 per
cent, while the royalties and corporate taxes paid back to government have
decreased by 63 per cent and more than 50 per cent, respectively.

Canadians must demand that governments stop spending financial and political
capital to support the interests of one industry whose aspirations will
literally devastate the planet, at the expense of all of us. The federal election on October 21st is an opportunity for Canadians to tell
decision makers to stop catering to the wishes of oil and gas companies.

Independent reports like this are fundamental to keeping the public informed on
pressing issues, and holding governments and corporations accountable for their
actions. They take a significant amount of time and resources to produce. If you
