Friends, did you know that 1 in 5 American adults experience mental illness each year? Or that one in six Americans aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year?
Unfortunately, a lot of people don't due to the stigma and misunderstanding that surrounds mental illnesses. But I saw it every day in my pediatrics practice. People, including our children and their families, are struggling.
That's why during the first full week of October, the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) raises awareness with National Mental Illness Awareness Week. But we cannot afford to only pay attention one week out of the year.
As a doctor for over 20 years, I know that mental health disorders do not discriminate. Whether you know it or not, mental illness most likely affects you directly or indirectly through family, friends, or coworkers. That's why we all must work together to break the stigma and support those who live with mental illnesses each and every day.
I'm proud to support National Mental Illness Awareness Week and am committed to ending the stigma surrounding mental health -- will you join me? Add your name now.
