John, one of the reasons I got into politics was to fight for fair, affordable housing for my neighbors.

My mom raised me and my siblings in a New York City Housing Authority apartment that didn’t have consistent heat and hot water in the winter.

So many people in power don’t understand the issues related to public housing -- so I decided to run. I wouldn’t be in Congress were it not for public housing.

I want to make sure that everyone knows what I already know -- the Federal government is the largest slumlord in this country.

There are children who have been poisoned by lead in their homes. There are senior citizens who are freezing this winter.

Everyone deserves to live in a safe and affordable home, and with Democrats in charge of the House and the Senate, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make this a reality.
