It seems that there is no bottom to the cynicism and depravity of the Republican Party. Most recently, some of the January 6 insurrectionists have started using their notoriety to launch political campaigns, hoping to win power in the system they just tried to overthrow.
Candidates for statehouses in West Virginia, Virginia, and Michigan are running as staunch pro-Trump Republicans, and they're using their presence at the insurrection to bolster their right-wing credentials. One of the rioters is even a candidate for Governor in Nebraska.
John, our public servants swear an oath to protect the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic -- an oath these insurrectionists have already failed.
If they're elected, there is no doubt they will use their new power to spout conspiracy theories, racism, and xenophobia. They will vote for legislation that will weaken our free and fair elections, and that will shake the very foundations of our democracy. They aren't hiding these goals either -- this is the Trump agenda, and they are his most loyal soldiers.
This group of people has no love for our country. They are a small but dangerous minority within the GOP, and we need to take the threat they pose seriously. We need to do everything we can to prevent them from gaining a greater foothold in our political system.
