Friend,
We learned this morning the Department of Justice is suing the state of Georgia for violating the Voting Rights Act and denying Black voters equal access to the ballot.
This is welcome news! After Republicans in Georgia passed one of the most dangerous voter suppression bills in the country, I am pleased to see our justice department taking action to protect voters. Attorney General Merrick Garland is calling this legislation what it is: an attempt to sow confusion and add barriers to the ballot box particularly for Black and Brown Americans who turned out in record numbers in 2020.
However, it should not take a lawsuit from the Department of Justice — requested by the President of the United States — to stop voter suppression. It should never have gone this far.
Unsurprisingly, Governor Kemp called the Department of Justice’s lawsuit part of a “far-left agenda that undermines election integrity and empowers federal government overreach in our democracy.”
But we all know the truth. If Republicans had won in Georgia in 2020, their “voter reform” bill wouldn’t have been considered in a million years. For instance, no-excuse absentee ballot voting worked just fine in Georgia for decades until Black and Brown voters started to use these ballots to avoid long lines in 2020. Then and only then did the Republicans in the state legislature decide that this sort of voting had problems of “election integrity” and create restrictions. They are shameless.
Republicans know what happens when we make it simple and straightforward for people to vote — more people vote and Democrats win.
I know the work to combat voter suppression is far from over, Friend. Please, chip in $25 to help me defend GA-07 from Republicans who continue to attack our right to vote >>>
