I want to give you a quick history lesson:
In 1965, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law. This monumental legislation ensured state and local governments couldn’t make discriminatory laws to stop minority voters from participating in the electoral process.
Fast forward to June 25th, 2013, when the Supreme Court gutted a key provision of the Voting Rights Act in Shelby County v. Holder -- opening the door for states with a proven record of voter suppression to once again create barriers to the voting booth.
In the eight years since Shelby County v. Holder, we’ve seen Republicans across the country race to restrict voting access by purging voter rolls, closing down poll locations, and requiring restrictive forms of voter i.d.
Our democracy only works when everyone’s voice can be heard. Stand with me as I fight for every American to have access to the ballot box by signing on below: [[link removed]]

The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was hard fought by the blood, sweat, and tears of the foot soldiers who put their lives on the line in my hometown of Selma for the right to vote and we’re still fighting today!
As a daughter of Selma who grew up in the shadow of the Edmund Pettus Bridge and at the feet of so many of those foot soldiers, I can assure you that there is no greater cause worth fighting for.
The John Lewis Voting Rights Act is on its way to introduction and passage in the House later this year, but Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans are doing everything they can to stop this bill from succeeding, just as they did this week with the For the People Act.
Voting rights shouldn’t rest on party lines.
The future of our democracy is at stake. I’m asking you personally: will you add your name to this petition and join me in my mission to protect and expand the right to vote? [[link removed]]
