Reclaim Our Schools L.A. is a broad-based coalition anchored by the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE), LA Students Deserve, LAANE, and UTLA, and committed to transforming our public schools and ensuring a safe, racially just reopening of our schools for all students.
Friends,

We are writing to celebrate three recent victories in Reclaim Our Schools L.A.’s budget campaign and the movement for a safe and racially just public school recovery. In addition to voting to support and expand Community Schools in the district, the School Board voted this week in support of resolutions to ensure safe and healthy schools and expand the Black Student Achievement Plan!

As COVID-19 has made all too clear, a return to school must not mean a return to the status quo. Parents, students, and teachers have been meeting with School Board members since May and worked hard to move LAUSD towards prioritizing equitable change. We are excited the School Board has met three of our demands, including:

Support and Expand Community Schools
* Support for ongoing funding for the 40 existing community schools
* Creation of an additional 30 community schools over the next 3 years, with an emphasis on schools covered by the Black Student Achievement Plan
* Establishing a Director of Community Schools and district level community school coaches

Ensure Safe and Healthy Schools
* A full-time nurse or other qualified health care professional in every school
* Access for students and families to vaccines and to full information regarding school reopening and COVID-19, with a priority in communities hit hardest by the virus
* Ongoing, deep cleaning in schools and access to personal protective equipment for everyone in the school community

Expansion of the Black Student Achievement Plan:
* $56.7 million more in funding for the Black Student Achievement Plan
* This adds to the $25 million diverted from School Police toward the program in February, for a total of $96 million invested to support Black students across LAUSD

These victories wouldn't have been possible without all of the parents, students, teachers, and community members who speak up to demand the schools our students and families deserve. But the fight is not over. We continue to push with renewed energy for LAUSD to establish police-free schools and reimagine student safety by redirecting the School Police budget toward the programs and resources students need to be successful in their educational journeys.

Thank you for your continued support in our movement to transform public education for all students across Los Angeles.
In Solidarity,

Rudy Gonzalves
