Remember how Lucy always pulled away the football when Charlie Brown tried to kick it? Republicans continue to pull the football out from underneath us on voting rights.

Republicans in Georgia — and across the country — have been insisting on voter IDs to “protect the integrity of the election.” Then, when Joe Manchin offered this as a compromise to pass a voting rights bill, they turned him down flat. Yep, you don’t get to kick that football Charlie Brown.

We all know GOP leadership does not care about the integrity of the election.

Republicans know if fewer people vote — if young people, people of color, and working people are restricted from voting — they will win more elections. We know this in Georgia because the Republicans here often say the quiet part out loud. The Speaker of the House openly worried that if absentee ballots were more accessible to people, Republicans would lose. The Republican Chair of the Board of Elections in Gwinnett County said the same thing.

Look, friend, I know firsthand that voters, regardless of party, want to see meaningful reforms to safeguard our right to vote.

But GOP lawmakers are desperate to suppress the vote because they know they cannot win free and fair elections based on their unpopular policies. We saw it firsthand in 2018 and 2020.

My 2020 campaign prioritized voter protections, and that is how we won. Now as we go into 2022, we need to build a massive voter protection program again, because Republicans have made themselves clear: they will not play fair.
