John,
It has never been more clear that Republicans are afraid of our power.
On Tuesday, all 50 Senate Republicans voted to block debate on the For the People Act. That's right, John. Every single one. Now, the GOP is waging a full-blown attack on voting rights from the national to the local level. They are determined to silence the voices of women and people of color.
Let’s make this clear: Republicans are doing this because they’re terrified of our grassroots power. They know that a record number of women voters — thanks to the efforts of Black and Brown organizers — rose up in 2020 to win back the White House and the Senate.
So now they’re doing everything in their power to strip crucial voter protections and stop our voices from being heard in future elections.
Here’s how we’re going to fight back: Our organizing team is preparing to launch an ambitious program leading up to the 2022 Election Cycle. Its purpose will be to leverage the power of women all across the country to combat voter suppression and elect leaders who are committed to fighting for voter rights and a feminist future.
This is not what a democracy looks like, John.
Not only did Senate Republicans and Conservative Democrats vote to block the For the People Act this week — they’ve been working together to pass local voter suppression laws in states like Arizona, Florida, Michigan, and Texas.
For example, Georgia Republicans recently passed sweeping election regulations in another attempt to suppress our votes and further Trump’s narrative that the 2020 election was stolen from him. The legislation they passed will:
❌ Reduce what hours Georgians are able to vote
❌ Prohibit organizations from giving food and water to voters waiting in line (hours-long lines in Georgia are extremely common especially in areas with high density of Black and Brown voters)
❌ Highly restrict places where folks can drop off their mail-in ballots
❌ Add burdensome requirements for voters to confirm their identity
That’s why we know that it’s important to start preparing NOW to organize our communities, make sure every person who can cast a vote has the resources to do so, and vote out every Republican who’s betrayed our democracy.
We’re committed to this fight — but our plans are limited by how much funding and resources our team has to invest in our organizing work.
Thanks for all of your support,
Women’s March
