June News from AHC Inc. News from AHC Inc. l June 2021 Developing affordable homes and helping communities thrive since 1975. Helping Residents Through COVID-19 As our residents continue to struggle with the impacts of COVID-19, AHC is adapting our programs and services to meet the needs of the families, seniors and individuals we serve. Bringing Vaccines to Residents Recognizing our residents may be hesitant to access vaccinations, we are working hard to make the process easier and more convenient. Working with Arlington County and Neighborhood Health, we are providing pop-up clinics at several of our Arlington properties during food distributions and also connecting residents to other nearby sites. To date, we've helped approximately 300 residents get vaccinated in the convenience of their apartment communities. Accessing $4.5 Million in Rental Assistance Our Resident Services staff continues to work tirelessly to help residents stay securely housed. To date, we've helped residents access $4.5 million in rental relief funds. Due to the ongoing demand, we added four social work interns to our rental assistance team in May. Extending Rent Relief Policy As our residents continue to face challenges from the pandemic, we are extending our current rent relief programs through December 31, 2021. This includes suspending all late fees and evictions for nonpayment of rent due to financial hardships related to COVID-19. Montgomery County Approves Site Plan for AHC and Habitat For Humanity Mixed-Income Redevelopment The Montgomery County Planning Board has approved the site plan for a new six-acre mixed-income community at 4010 Randolph Road. Located on Montgomery County-owned land, the redevelopment is a partnership among AHC, Habitat for Humanity of Metro Maryland, and Interfaith Works. The new community will offer nearly 200 affordable homes, including both rental and homeownership opportunities, at various incomes – including deeply affordable units at 30%, 40% and 50% AMI – with 80 hard-to-find three- and four-bedroom apartment homes. The project will also feature an half-acre park with a playground, picnic area, inviting pedestrian walkways, and open lawn areas. Huge thanks to the team that helped design the site and navigate the County site plan process, including Bonstra Haresign Architects, Parker Rodriguez Landscape Architects, Johnson Bernat Associates (civil engineer), Lerch Early Brewer (zoning attorney), and Kimley-Horn (traffic engineer). We look forward to continuing to work with this team as we turn our vision for this new affordable community into a reality. The Planning Board approval enables us to move ahead toward a groundbreaking in early 2022, with the first new residents expected in 2024. Hats Off to AHC's 31 High School Grads! Congratulations to AHC's College and Career Readiness Class of 2021! All 31 high school students graduated this past week, and are heading to college in the fall. Nearly all are the first in their families to achieve this milestone. We are so proud of this amazing class. Together, they have earned more than $3 million in scholarships and grants. The class is attending more than a dozen universities, including Harvard, Yale, Tufts, Northeastern, University of Virginia, University of Rochester, James Madison University, NOVA, and more. Recently, AHC hosted a picnic to celebrate students' exciting new futures. It was hard to tell who was most proud among the students, families and mentors. As mentor Zaynab Malik said, "I love meeting incredibly talented people and helping them achieve their dreams."
