Hi John,

Working with state Democratic parties, I've seen firsthand the effects of decades of GOP voter suppression tactics and attempts to disenfranchise voters—particularly voters of color—in predominantly Democratic communities. Republican officials have changed the rules and the maps to undermine democracy and push minority rule so they can stay in power.

That’s why our Swing Left team is working to elect Democrats up and down the ballot and defend democracy—so our government can reflect the will of the people. I’m thrilled to be launching [our 10-year plan to protect and expand democracy and defeat the GOP]([link removed]), not just in the 2022 midterms, but over the course of the next decade.

Trump is out of office and Democrats have unified control of the federal government, but American democracy remains incredibly fragile. 147 congressional Republicans voted to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and still refuse to acknowledge their role in fomenting an attack against the Capitol. Republicans in state governments across the country have used Trump’s false claims of election fraud as an excuse to further restrict voting and distort democracy. These attacks on voting rights disproportionately affect Black and brown communities with discriminatory policies like strict voter ID laws, limits on absentee and early voting, and polling place closures.

That’s why our 10-year plan aims to combat voter suppression at the state level—particularly in states where elections have federal implications—while maintaining and expanding Democrats’ power at the federal level.

Our strategy is made up of three main pillars: keeping Virginia blue in 2021, protecting Democratic majorities in Congress in 2022, and charting a 10-year plan to build Democratic power in the states.

Virginia target races in 2021:
10 House of Delegates races | 1 gubernatorial race

[Virginia's 2021 state elections]([link removed]) will be the first referendum on the Biden-Harris administration and the state's governing Democratic trifecta. Winning in 2021 is critical as we build momentum heading into the 2022 midterm elections.

Congressional target races in 2022:
5 U.S. Senate target races | 40–50 U.S. House races

Our main strategic priority of the 2022 cycle is preserving the Democratic majorities in the [U.S. Senate]([link removed]) and the [U.S. House]([link removed]). We’re keeping a close eye on the redistricting process as new maps are drawn this summer, and will have more details about target competitive House districts later this year.

State-level target races in 2022:
3 gubernatorial races | 7 state legislative target states

Our [2022 state legislative targets]([link removed]) prioritize supporting candidates where short-term gains have the greatest potential to help protect democratic outcomes in 2024.

You can make an impact on our target races, starting right now. [Donate to Swing Left’s National Impact Fund to give to the most strategic races with just one donation.]([link removed]) 100% of your grassroots donation goes to candidates in the highest-priority races at this moment.

Thank you for being a part of this effort to defend and strengthen our democracy. We know that the work ahead will be challenging, but together we’ll show Republicans that a fight against American democracy is a fight they won’t win.
