UPTOWN CHATS: Toxics are a Drag
A Panel Discussion on Toxic Beauty Products in the Queer Community

Hair straighteners, skin lighteners, and makeup products can be packed with harmful chemicals that can have adverse health impacts. Many of these toxic products are disproportionately aimed at women and femme-identified people of color.

In celebration of Pride month, we will host a panel of researchers, advocates, and queer drag performers to discuss the toxic chemicals found in beauty and other personal care products and their impact on the queer community. Moderated by Taylor Morton, our Director of Environmental Health and Education, this panel will include:

Jahlove Serrano ([link removed]) , a health educator, AIDS activist and youth advocate, background dancer, choreographer, androgynous model, and drag queen

Dr. Ami Zota ([link removed]) , an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental & Occupational Health at the George Washington University Milken School of Public Health

Sonal Jessel, M.P.H. was featured in National Geographic’s July cover story about the impact of extreme heat around the world. She took the journalist on our heat tour of East Harlem to help them understand how extreme heat disproportionately impacts communities of color. For example, in New York City, Blacks are twice as likely to die from heat-related illnesses as other New Yorkers. And East Harlem is one such community, with temperatures in August reaching two degrees hotter than the city average. Read ([link removed])
