On May 4, 1961, thirteen young people boarded buses in Washington D.C. to challenge the persistent local laws enforcing segregation—despite two Supreme Court decisions declaring segregation unconstitutional. In the weeks and months that followed their historic trip, civil rights activists planned dozens more of these bus protests, which became known as Freedom Rides.
Sixty years later, our current voting rights crisis demands the same bold action. Our friends at Black Voters Matter are building on the Freedom Ride’s legacy by launching the Freedom Ride for Voting Rights.
Join Black Voters Matter as the “Blackest Bus in America” rolls into its final stop this Saturday, June 26, on the National Mall to rally for voting rights.

For the past week, the Freedom Ride for Voting Rights has made stops across the South, educating and engaging Black communities and building up Black political power in the face of rampant voter suppression. Now, as the ride reaches Washington, D.C.—where it all began sixty years ago—it’s time to let Congress know we’re ready to do what it takes to dismantle the systems of oppression that are blocking the ballot box.
Protecting and expanding voting rights is racial justice. This past week, Senate Republicans filibustered the For the People Act, a reform bill that would alleviate some of the worst voter suppression efforts targeting Black and Brown Americans. The filibuster, which was popularized by southern segregationists to stymie civil rights, once again shut down debates and protected the racist status quo.
The Senate has another important choice to make in whether or not they’ll vote to make Washington, D.C. the 51st state. 700,000 residents of the District—the majority of whom are Black and Brown—have been denied voting power and representation in Congress for centuries. It’s past time to make sure their voices are heard in the halls of power.
I can think of no better place to come together and make our voices heard than our nation’s capital. Join the Freedom Ride this Saturday, June 26, at 12 p.m. on the National Mall and make sure your lawmakers know where you stand on voting rights.
