Friend, As a U.S. Senator committed to eradicating polio, I am troubled by the recent attacks on polio health workers in Afghanistan. President Biden has planned a complete withdrawal of U.S. federal troops from Afghanistan by September 11, 2021. Since the announcement, polio health workers have been attacked and murdered. For Americans of today, polio is a crippling disease of the past. But for Afghans, the transmission of wild polio is a serious threat that accelerates greater regional instability. The promised absence of U.S. federal troops has already opened the door for violence against the vulnerable and innocent. |
