If anyone can save democracy, it’s all of us Indivisibles,
WOW. After we sent our email on Tuesday night (below) we were BLOWN AWAY by how many people reached out to get involved. For as infuriating as it was to watch Republicans filibuster even beginning debate on S.1 (the For the People Act), it was even more inspiring to be a part of this amazing community of activists who used that obstructionism as an inspiration to rally for our democracy.
Couple updates on the fight to pass the For the People Act:
- Thanks to all this enthusiasm, groups and activists have added dozens more Deadline for Democracy events nationwide over the next two and a half weeks. If there’s an event near you, it’ll be displayed below, please take a minute to RSVP and put it on your calendar. If there's no event, never fear: We’re adding more events every day, so be sure to check our events map throughout recess or join us virtually for one our upcoming national phonebanks on Tuesday, June 29 or Wednesday, July 7.
Freedom Ride for Voting Rights - Washington, D.C. #FreedomRide2021
When: Saturday, June 26, 1:30 PM Where: Lincoln Memorial, Washington, DC

- If you haven’t yet seen it, take a second to watch Indivisible Co-Executive Director Ezra on Rachel Maddow earlier this week and then share it with a friend. It’s a little out of date now (it was from before the filibuster) but it gives a great overview of the Deadline for Democracy campaign. Then if you’re feeling inspired, chip in a few bucks to help fund this week of action and all our work.
- And before the events begin, we need your help kicking off this recess in style! 🎉 RSVP now to tune in our Deadline for Democracy livestream event on Monday, June 28 at 8pm Eastern Time/5pm Pacific Time. Be sure to invite your friends to join us!
Ezra summarized it well on Maddow the other night, so we want to leave you with his words:
“Politicians have a very scientific method for figuring out what they’re going to do. They lick their finger, they stick it up in the air, and they see which way the wind is going to blow… If we are successful in changing the way the wind blows over the course of the July 4th recess, they’re going to take this up again, they’re going to amend the filibuster, and they’re going to pass these voting rights reforms.”

If you’re ready to make sure the wind blows towards democracy, RSVP for an event now.

From: Indivisible Team Date: June 22, 2021 Subject: BREAKING: Senate Republicans just filibustered the For the People Act
Indivisibles,
It’s happening: Senate Republicans just filibustered the For the People Act, blocking movement on crucial democracy reform provisions to curb money in politics, expand voting access, and more. This is the nail in the coffin for any illusions that the GOP will suddenly quit their partisan obstructionism and decide to support these widely popular measures.
We don’t have any more time to waste playing their games -- we need to pass the For the People Act by the end of July (that’s the Deadline for Democracy) to make sure it’s in effect before next year’s midterms. It’s time to eliminate the filibuster and pass real, transformative democracy reform. And we need to do it as soon as the Senate returns from recess.
That’s where we come in. Indivisibles have what it takes to build a massive mobilization and show our senators we demand real change. And with Congress’ two-week-long recess starting in just a few days, it’s the perfect time to make sure they hear us. So right now, we’ve got two big things for you to do to make this mobilization a success:
- Before anything else, head over to the Deadline for Democracy website, find an event near you, and sign up to attend over the next three weeks. Or, if there isn’t an event on the map in your area, get a few friends together and register your own event by clicking here. Getting as many people in the streets and in Senate offices as possible, and building enough media attention that senators can’t ignore us is crucial to succeeding this recess. We need you to join in. It worked for the Tea Party, and it worked for us when we saved the Affordable Care Act. It will work again now if you can join.
- Then, click here to make a donation to Indivisible. For this recess alone, we’re planning to spend over $505,000 on things like digital ads and recruitment, event swag, postcards, and more to ensure a successful mobilization -- and it’s all a part of our bigger democracy reform budget. We’re grassroots-funded, which means people like you, giving an average of just $23, make our work possible.

Watching the Senate GOP fight tooth and nail to keep the people’s voices out of our government is infuriating. They’re doing it because they can’t win on their policy positions: we have the people on our side.
We knew months ago that a situation like this was coming, and we’ve been preparing for it. It’s time to put all those plans and all that energy into motion and win. And no matter what happens, we’ll keep fighting, because we the people deserve better, and we know just how much we can accomplish when we work together. Every person -- including you -- can make the difference in this fight, in whatever way works.
