The filibuster does not appear anywhere in the Constitution.
But to hear Mitch McConnell and his Republican cronies talk about it, you’d think it was an unassailable principle of American democracy.
It’s not. It’s just an antiquated, Jim Crow-era relic designed to allow a minority of Senators to block progress.
Thanks to the Senate filibuster, not a single Republican had to go on record to say whether they supported the For the People Act this week. Instead, Mitch McConnell prevented it from even coming to a vote.
It’s time to reform the filibuster and save our democracy.
