News from Representative Allred

Dear Friend,

Last week, I welcomed CBS This Morning to Dallas to discuss a national paid family leave policy. Handling a newborn while discussing prospective legislation is tricky, but it is important that we highlight the balancing act that so many American parents face on a daily basis. If you missed it, you can watch the full interview below.

The United States is the only wealthy nation in the world that doesn’t guarantee its citizens time off to care for a new child or sick loved one, despite research that shows better outcomes for all involved when paid leave is offered. Every worker should have access to the peace of mind that paid leave offers when caring for a sick family member or after the birth or adoption of a child. That’s why I am working hard to pass this policy as part of President Biden’s American Families Plan.

Additionally, I am proud to have helped pass the American Rescue Plan, which President Biden signed into law, which expands the Child Tax Credit and puts money in the pockets of North Texas families. 85% of children in our district will benefit from the expanded tax credit and parents will receive $3,600 for children under age 6 and $3,000 for children ages 6 to 17. The American Rescue Plan also reworked the credit so that, starting in July, parents can collect up to half of the credit in monthly payments of $250 or $300 (depending on the age of the child) instead of as a lump sum after filing their taxes.

Soon you will be able to track and manage your Child Tax Credit payments in the IRS portal.

I will continue to build on this progress and work with the Biden Administration to pass the American Families Plan, which in addition to establishing a national paid leave policy, will lower the costs of child care, make pre-k universal for 3- and 4-year-olds and support caregivers. If you have any questions about the Child Tax Credit or need assistance dealing with the IRS, please give my office a call at (972) 972-7949. It is an honor to serve North Texas families.

Sincerely,
