Dear John,
Did you see Sofia’s note from earlier this week? In it she shared her experience as a recent high school graduate trying to plan out her future, while also navigating the harsh realities of climate change and pollution.
Kids like Sofia didn’t create the climate crisis, but they’re the generation having to face it head on. With wildfires already raging in Central and Southern Oregon and a Portland weather forecast of 111 degrees (no, that’s not a typo) this Sunday, it can all feel so daunting.
But there is hope.
Thanks to rural and BIPOC-led environmental justice leaders at the Oregon Clean Energy Opportunity campaign, legislators have an opportunity to pass two important bills that will support communities across the state. At stake: one of the nation’s strongest 100% clean electricity commitments and a home repair fund to benefit the communities most in need. Together, these bills can serve as the energy component of Oregon’s recovery from today’s overlapping crises. These bills are being voted on by the House TOMORROW and then by the Senate directly afterwards! We must urge lawmakers to pass these policies before the session ends THIS Sunday (or sooner).
Sofia and her generation are counting on us to act. Will you take action and tell your lawmakers to support 100% Clean Energy for All (HB 2021) and Healthy Homes (HB 2842)?
With gratitude,
Doug Moore
