John,
Yesterday, President Biden fired another Trump holdover whose primary qualification was the desire to undermine the agency he led ― Mark Calabria, head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency.
The firing came after the Supreme Court affirmed President Biden’s absolute right to fire these appointees.
Unfortunately, the Social Security Administration is still headed by Trumpists Andrew Saul and David Black. But Justice Elena Kagan’s opinion singled out the Social Security Administration as the next likely agency for Biden to clean house1―so it’s our job to make sure the Biden administration takes the hint.
We’re keeping up the pressure to make sure that President Biden doesn’t let the Trump administration in exile undermine Social Security! Chip in $7 today!
Even before the Supreme Court announced its decision, it was clear that President Biden had the power to fire the Commissioner of Social Security, Andrew Saul, and his Deputy Commissioner, David Black. It's long past time for the president to use that power. Biden should have fired Saul and Black on January 20th. But for any Biden advisors who are still hesitating about the constitutionality of removing Saul, this case should put those doubts to rest.
In firing Calabria, the White House issued a statement that “the President is moving forward today to replace the current Director with an appointee who reflects the Administration’s values.”
The Biden administration is feeling the pressure―We need to keep it up until the Social Security Administration has new leadership that will defend Social Security, not undermine it! Chip in $7 today!
We aren’t the only ones who saw Justice Kagan’s comments. Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio recognized that Saul & Black’s leadership is inconsistent with the Biden administration’s agenda for Social Security.
“If we are to protect and expand Social Security for seniors, people with disabilities and survivors, we need new leadership dedicated to carrying out that vision,” Senator Brown said last night.
Saul and Black are acting in opposition to the Biden administration's stated values. Biden ran on a platform of protecting and expanding Social Security. He needs a Social Security Commissioner who will support that goal, not undermine it. Powerful members of Congress have called for the removal of this union-busting,2 anti-Social Security3 Trump crony.
Even one more hour of Saul and Black atop the Social Security Administration is a direct assault on the tens of millions of Americans who rely on Social Security.
