Friend,
Earlier this year, a study on the spread of right-wing disinformation online hit our inboxes and stopped us dead in our tracks.
The key finding: Far-right disinformation spreads five times faster on social media than straightforward news outlets. No wonder 60% of Republicans believe the 2020 election was stolen and one-third still don’t even believe global warming is happening.
Right-wing disinformation has become an existential threat to our democracy, and it’s clear that Mark Zuckerberg and the other Big Tech CEOs aren’t going to fix this problem. In fact, their algorithms are built to keep us clicking by triggering fear, anger, and hatred so they can sell more ads.
That’s why, day after day, the most highly engaged Facebook posts in the U.S. are from right-wing demagogues like Ben Shapiro, Sean Hannity, and Tucker Carlson.
To fight back and win, we must grow and expand our own readership so we can inform, engage, and inspire action to tackle issues like the climate emergency and the corporate capture of our democracies.
We’ve invested in upgrading our website to make our news stories more mobile-friendly and shareable. Now we need to keep going by growing our audience across social media and by drawing more visitors directly to our site.
Will you help battle right-wing disinformation by making a donation to our Mid-Year Campaign to help us reach our goal of $75,000 by the end of June?
