# [#]Back in 2006, during his first term in the State Assembly, Tom Nelson voted against the Republican marriage equality ban. It was a vote that took real courage.
Public feelings on marriage equality were the opposite of what they are today, and because of the large GOP majorities in the Legislature, passage of the constitutional amendment was never in doubt.
Because Tom represented a conservative district, party leaders told him to vote for the ban — the easy way to avoid the issue in his next campaign.
That’s not what Tom did, because that’s not who he is. Believe Tom when he says he’ll beat Ron Johnson and go to Washington to stand for justice and equality — because at one of the darkest hours for LGBTQ Wisconsinites, Tom had our back.
