Friend,
Senate Republicans have filibustered S. 1, the For the People Act, the
landmark voting rights legislation already passed by the House that would
overrule almost 400 voter suppression bills that are sweeping the
nation.(1)
It’s official -- the Republican Party is post-policy, caring more about
maintaining power than protecting our democracy.(2)
And Senator Dianne Feinstein is complicit. She is holding out for a
compromise, even though Mitch McConnell had already rejected the watered
down deal posed by Senator Joe Manchin.(3) She has refused to use her
leadership to force a change in the filibuster rule.(4) And now she’s
helped defeat S. 1.
That's why we’re planning a street-level ad campaign in Feinstein’s
hometown telling our senator to either step up -- or step down.

democracy?
Because of the filibuster, S. 1 didn’t even get to the floor for open
debate.
The vote to move it to the floor was 50–50, and Vice President Kamala
Harris should have cast the tiebreaking vote. But the filibuster makes it
so the bill needed 60 votes to move forward, and with McConnell’s
stranglehold on the Republican caucus, there was no way that was going to
happen.
Feinstein is one of the three prominent advocates for keeping the
filibuster in place, along with Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema. But Manchin
and Sinema are from red-leaning states, with a lot of political pressure
from the right to keep the filibuster in place. Feinstein has no such
state pressure, and more than 100 progressive groups have called on her to
act to end the slavery-era rule.(5)
Even with voting rights on the chopping block, Feinstein hasn’t moved --
but we’re making headway. California’s new senator, Alex Padilla, has come
out in favor of ending the filibuster. Now Feinstein says she’s “thinking
about it.”(6) It’s time for her to stop thinking and start acting.
We’re reminding Feinstein that she works for us -- and 65% of her
constituents are angry with her.(7) Our executive director called out
Feinstein in the San Francisco Chronicle, her hometown paper. Now we’re
following up with a campaign in San Francisco telling Feinstein: Step up,
or step down.
