FEDERAL

Voting Rights

The sweeping voting rights bill championed by Democrats failed to advance in the Senate yesterday after a dead-even 50-50 vote, falling short of the 60 votes needed to move it forward. This wasn’t too much of a surprise, since Senate Republicans signaled they wouldn’t support it. Still, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called Republicans’ united block of the bill "indefensible" and "ridiculous." The bill aimed to counter efforts by GOP-led state legislatures to pass restrictive voting laws following the 2020 presidential election. Now, Democrats will take on the issue from other angles. The Senate Rules Committee plans to hold a series of hearings, including in Georgia, calling for passage of new legislation. Dems also may look to push the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, a different bill that shores up provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. (Source: CNN)

STATE

DeSantis and his GOP Attack Education System

According to The Washington Post, “Ron DeSantis is showing Trump skills at waging culture war…He is setting himself up as Trump’s running mate or successor by showing a genius for appealing to every disreputable prejudice of the GOP base. This man knows how to outrage Democrats and, therefore, delight Republicans….Mask mandates. Vaccine passports. Voter fraud. Tech company censorship. Transgender athletes. Undocumented migrants. Critical race theory. DeSantis pushes every single right-wing hot-button issue. He understands how to demonize and polarize for political advantage — and he doesn’t care about how much collateral damage he inflicts.” On Monday, DeSantis signed 3 education bills aimed at civics and “ideology”. These are not good for students, teachers, and parents. DeSantis must be defeated in 2022. You can read more here:

LOCAL

School Board Member Rosario & Conspiracy Theories

At recent School Board meetings, Member Jackie Rosario has taken the cultural wars local by reading and playing audio recordings of propaganda from right-wing organizations that are anti-public education, anti-LGBTQ and anti-diversity. Ms. Rosario has shown she is unfit to sit on the school board and has been called out on it by numerous community members, including our Operations Coordinator Stacey Klim. You can read more about it here:
