Dear John,
As ADL’s Senior Vice President for International Affairs, I monitor threats to Jewish communities around the world. But Wednesday’s far-right terror attack on a synagogue in Halle, Germany on Yom Kippur hit close to home like no other — because my ADL colleague Dalia Grinfeld was inside, attending services during the assault.
Dalia is our Assistant Director of European Affairs and based in Berlin. Below is her story of ADL’s response to this horrific attack.

As ADL’s representative in Berlin, I want to share with you how we have been responding to the terror attack against the synagogue in Halle on Yom Kippur.
To share with the ADL community around the world, I met with members of Germany’s Jewish community

and recorded a video recounting some of their comments, declaring resilience and a commitment to continue proudly living Jewish lives in Germany after the attack. That demonstration of courage reflects a vital aspect of German Jewish life today. But there is also great fear in the community.
I know that fear first-hand, as I was on the ground to support the Jewish community.
I’m shaken, but also proud of ADL’s response.
Together, with local Jewish welfare organizations, I set up

24-hour hotlines for Jews to call to receive professional counseling, both for those who were traumatized by the attack and those who now fear attending Jewish events or even wearing a kippa or Star of David in public. ADL is supporting the cost of the professional counselors, as well as a Shabbat celebration in Berlin for the resilient group of students who had been visiting the Halle synagogue during the attack.
Our Center on Extremism immediately produced a

briefing on the attacker’s known motives, social media posts, and an analysis of his extremist statements, which I shared with Jewish community leaders and German authorities, who thanked us for providing this intelligence.
Our International Affairs team called on the German authorities to investigate the law enforcement failure to provide police protection for the synagogue on Yom Kippur: “We welcome the statements of Germany’s leaders that they stand with the Jewish community, but it’s more important that police stand in front of the community. German authorities must investigate this failure and ensure it never happens again.”
ADL is making a difference on the ground in support of the community and with the German authorities, to ensure that Jewish life is supported and protected.
We are proud of Dalia’s resolve and compassion as she and our ADL team support the German Jewish community during this time of need. We all must help the strong Jewish community in Germany fight back against the global plague of anti-Semitic extremism that confronts us all.
Sincerely,
Sharon Nazarian
