What do you call a market where enormously wealthy corporations degrade our climate -- and get tax subsidies?

Good question. Hint: The answer is not “free.”

“Making Capitalism Work for All” — Dec. 10-11, 2019 in DC

Dear John,

ASBC has a longtime favorite saying: “If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.” That’s especially true of climate change. Our “free” market lets fossil fuel giants devour our future – and rewards them with tax subsidies.

Redirecting energy subsidies to renewables is a sensible solution. As recently reported in The Guardian, “’Almost everywhere, renewables are so close to being competitive that [a 10-30% subsidy swap] tips the balance, and turns them from a technology that is slowly growing to one that is instantly the most viable and can replace really large amounts of generation,’ said Richard Bridle of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD). “The question now is, can we transition quickly enough away from fuels like coal, and subsidy reform is a very obvious step towards that.”

So what’s the holdup? That’s a good question; one of many we’ll be exploring at the ASBC Summit, Dec. 10-11. On the key topic, “What Will It Take to Solve the Climate Crisis?” we’ll hear from provocative leaders like these:

Ellen Dorsey, Wallace Global Fun on the Divest/Invest campaign

Robert Pollin, U of MA on the Green New Deal and carbon pricing .

Lauren Maunus, Sunrise Movement on youth-led climate action

At the Summit, we’ll also meet on Capitol Hill with members of Congress from both parties -- and tell them why our businesses support policy changes to make our market economy work better for people, the planet, and companies that care about them. Think of the Summit as a business meeting to take on reinventing capitalism – a stakeholder meeting of leaders in the progressive ecosystem.  So join us in D.C. in Dec. Let’s change “business as usual” to something better.
