When I met Arthur 27 years ago this summer, I couldn’t have imagined the damage
he’d do to the BNP. Now his story is being told for the first time in a short
book I’ve written about someone who I genuinely think is a true antifascist
hero.

I’ve worked with many people inside far right groups over the years. I am still
doing it today. But Arthur stands out. He was an antifascist from the start. His
determination to serve the cause was remarkable. Outside of a single family
member, nobody knew he wasn’t really a nazi.
Over ten years Arthur went to 400 BNP events, rallies and campaign days. He heard nauseating racism, witnessed violence firsthand, and was targeted by
protesters who obviously had no idea he was as anti-BNP as they were!
But Arthur wasn’t just our eyes and ears inside the BNP. He acted. Working
together, we sowed division and disruption across the party, and wreaked havoc
on their plans to grow the BNP in London. They ended up fighting each other more than working towards their fascist
revolution. And when David Copeland waged his one-man terror attack on London’s Black,
Asian and LGBT+ communities, it was Arthur who helped lead the police to his
door.
Arthur is remarkably humble and has never asked for any thanks or recognition.
So when Netflix decided to make a documentary about the London nail bombings, we
decided to right a wrong. I’m really proud to say we’ve just delivered a weighty book of thank you
messages from HOPE not hate supporters to Arthur, including words from Angela
Rayner MP, Frances O’Grady and actor Michael Sheen.
The book I've written brought back some memories of that time. It was always
tense, but every day Arthur spent inside the BNP was a day when he was damaging
them and their cause. I am really proud of this book, and the story it tells. Get your copy here.
