Friend,
For decades, the corporate media have paid pitifully little attention to the climate emergency, openly dismissing it as a “ratings killer.”
But last year, they may have hit rock bottom. Even as global temps soared, TV news coverage of the climate crisis actually went down by more than 50 percent.
Despite the devastating impacts of climate change ringing alarm bells all around us—deadly wildfires, devastating hurricanes and droughts, and the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef and the Amazon—coverage of the climate emergency made up just 0.4% of all news coverage on the corporate broadcast TV networks last year.
That’s less than one half of one percent.
We have virtually no chance of addressing the climate emergency unless the public fully understands the urgency of the crisis. But as a nonprofit newsroom, we simply can’t survive without the support of our readers. That’s why we’re asking you to donate today.
As the corporate media's coverage of the climate emergency gets worse, the daily reporting of Common Dreams becomes even more essential. Donate today and help reach our Mid-Year Campaign’s urgent goal of $75,000.
The atmospheric concentration of CO2 is now at its highest level in 4 million years, and scientists are warning that we are already speeding past a tipping point that will lock in several meters of sea level rise, trillions in economic destruction, and the suffering and displacement of billions worldwide.
The Common Dreams news team is committed to sounding the alarm every single day. Will you help support this work now?
