John,
Last night, elections took place across New York state, and with the
results rolling in we can definitely say that it was an extraordinary
night.
India Walton, who ran for Mayor of Buffalo as a democratic socialist,
shocked the political establishment by unseating a four-term incumbent in
New York’s second-biggest city, and in the process became Buffalo’s
first-ever female mayor.
India said it quite well last night when discussing her victory: “All
that we are doing in this moment is claiming what is rightfully ours. We
are the workers. We do the work. And we deserve a government that works
with and for us.”
Alvin Bragg, who ran for Manhattan District Attorney, is prone to become
the first Black person to ever hold the office. Throughout his race, Bragg
focused on inequities in the justice system that disproportionately
impacted Black people and promised to use the power of his office to bring
an end to mass incarceration.
John, what these landmark victories show is that when we excite
our base and expand the electorate, we can build a politics that serves
all people, not just the wealthy and powerful.
And we’re just getting started.
We’ll be supporting progressive candidates in local and state elections
throughout 2021, working next to elect Nina Turner in Ohio, and laying
down the groundwork to expand Democratic majorities in the House and
Senate in 2022 and we’ll need your help every step of the way.

At DFA, we know how to build progressive power -- and that's exactly what
we’ll do in Ohio and beyond, by recruiting and training volunteers,
fundraising for the campaigns, and uplifting the issues that matter most
in these elections.
The key to electing transformational progressives is to engage, inspire
and mobilize the new American majority of voters of color and white
progressives, but to do that, we have to fight at all levels and in all 50
states.
Over the coming weeks and months, we will be working in Ohio, New
Hampshire, and South Carolina to maximize our impact, add value, and help
drive progressive campaigns to victory.
We're excited to continue our work as we support bold progressive
champions, like Sharetta Smith and Nina Turner. We're going into full
campaign mode to support them but -- as a grassroots progressive movement
organization -- we're going to need some significant resources to make it
happen.

If we’re going to accomplish what we want for this country, millions of
Americans have to get out and make their voices heard.
Thank you for being a part of this fight for progressive change. Together,
we can build expansive campaigns and elect progressives up and down the
ballot across the country.
