Dear John,

A new study found disparities in life expectancy in counties along the US-Mexico border.
Life Expectancy At The US-Mexico Border
Ahead of Print: Life Expectancy At The US-Mexico Border
The July 2021 issue will focus on borders, immigrants, and health. In an ahead-of-print paper released today, Keith Gennuso and colleagues calculated life expectancy for counties on the US side of the US-Mexico border. They found large gaps in life expectancy by race and ethnicity.

The life expectancy for American Indian/Alaska Native residents within the border region is 75.0 years; for Black residents, 78.4 years; for White residents, 80.6 years; for Hispanic residents, 81.6 years, and for Asian residents, 88.1 years.

In comparison, the overall US life expectancy is 79.1 years.

Today on Health Affairs Blog, Jacob Tanumihardjo and coauthors discuss significant progress made by community-based health care organizations in reducing food insecurity during the pandemic.

Also, Erin Brantley and Sara Rosenbaum argue that recent developments in Missouri show that voter efforts to make
Medicaid eligibility a constitutional right may not be enough.

Elevating Voices: Pride Month: In June 2016 a gunman murdered 49 people and injured many more at PULSE, a Florida LGBT nightclub. Many who were injured by the shooting needed blood transfusions, but gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men were turned away from donating blood.

In a 2016 Health Affairs Blog post,
Adam Eickmeyer argues that these rules are discriminatory and calls on the FDA to modernize their donation policies.
