The danger to democracy is real. Ending the filibuster is the way to protect it.

Yesterday Republicans used the filibuster to prevent debate on the For the People Act, once again proving that they are willing to endanger democracy in order to remain in power.

Senator Feinstein recently told a reporter that she didn't believe our democracy was in jeopardy. We disagree. Ever since the 2020 election, Trump and his Republican sycophants have been undermining democracy with the Big Lie that the election was stolen. They tried to get courts and state legislatures to overturn the results, and then they incited a massive mob attack on the Capitol to violently prevent certification of Biden's victory. In state after state, Republican-controlled legislatures are ramming through highly partisan voter suppression, election-rigging, and other anti-democratic laws clearly targeted against urban, nonwhite, young, and senior voters likely to support Democratic candidates.

To defend democracy against this Republican assault, we support the For The People and John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement acts now before Congress. Republicans are united against those bills. Last week Senator Manchin (D-WV) proposed compromise legislation that would provide some important voting-rights protections. It also includes some provisions Republicans want. GOP leaders McConnell and McCarthy immediately rejected Manchin's offer out of hand. Their instant opposition to any compromise makes it clear that the only way to defend democracy is to abolish or reform the filibuster so that voting rights legislation can be passed in the Senate by the slim Democratic majority.

Therefore, we call on Senator Feinstein to recognize that democracy is under attack and to defend it by ending or changing the filibuster and enacting meaningful voting rights legislation.

Call Senator Feinstein and tell her ([link removed]) : End the Filibuster to Protect Democracy!

It is now clear that Republicans in the Senate will continue to use the filibuster to prevent votes on key legislation that Democrats would otherwise be able to pass with a simple majority vote. Unless this process is reformed, Republicans will successfully turn aside all legislation to protect voters’ rights.
