chip in $5 to keep people home and out of prison
John, thousands of people who were released from prison to home confinement during the pandemic, and have been reconnecting with their families and friends, are now at threat of being re-incarcerated because of a Trump-era legal memo.
These are elderly people in poor health - mothers, fathers, grandparents, children, community members - who are now spending home confinement supporting loved ones financially and emotionally.
And unless we push Attorney General Merrick Garland to intervene, they will be once again ripped from their homes after the administration declares the pandemic over.
John, keeping our elders out of prison is essential to our fight to end the mass incarceration of Black communities.
That’s why we were relieved to learn last year that the Bureau of Prisons (BOP) would be releasing 7,000 incarcerated individuals at risk of Covid-19 to home confinement.1
Despite the 99.9% success rate of the home confinement program, people will be forced to return to federal prison and pay their own way back.2 Unless we move the DOJ to action.
John, we know you're committed to the fight for justice and ending mass incarceration that plagues Black communities. We need your support now to fight for those who need us.
This is clearly about punishment, not public safety. People will always have a better chance at staying safe and healthy when they are at home with their communities.
So, if your budget allows it, support our campaign and continue showing up for Black lives.
support our work to keep black people out of cages
