On Monday the UK and EU announced new sanctions targeting more sources of income for the military. They brought in sanctions on the timber and gems industries, which we have been campaigning for.
These new sanctions will make it harder for the military to earn money selling timber and gems internationally.
Thousands of Burma Campaign UK supporters emailed the British government and European Union member states calling for these sanctions. It worked. Thank you.
There is no magic bullet which can bring down the military. Since the coup almost 900 people have been killed, more than 6,000 arrested and more than 200,000 people in ethnic states have fled attacks by the military. People in the country continue to resist the coup, protesting every day despite the dangers.
Our role internationally is to do everything we can to support them, cutting off the supplies of money, arms and equipment the military depends on.
It’s going to take time and a lot of effort to keep pressuring the British government, EU and other countries to act. We can’t do it without your support.
The simple act of sending an email when we ask you to really does make a difference.
PS: In another sign of how campaigns are working, 119 countries have supported a UN Resolution calling for the flow of arms to the military to be cut. Most of these countries don’t yet have an arms embargo, so this is a fantastic opportunity to ask them to turn words into action and impose their own arms embargo. We’ll need your help for this and will be in touch soon.
